The Newsroom

July 10, 2012

Three episodes in, everyone is buzzing about Aaron Sorkin’s new show, ‘The Newsroom.’ Most journalists panned it (although my coworker says we can all learn some lessons from Will McAvoy’s rules for news) but non-journalist friends uniformly love the series: the uniquely Sorkin dialogue, the fast pace, the smart conversations about actual news stories and the peek into how news gets onto your TV.

Sure it uses the power of hindsight (the show starts in 2010 and uses real-life events to drive the narrative) to be omniscient about “current” events as they are breaking — but I can’t turn it off. It’s not perfect and it’s not realistic but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable.

Are you watching? I love hearing what people not working in journalism think. (The entire first episode is on YouTube.)
