In Print: Useless Majors, Real-Life Barbie and A Visit From Prince Harry

April 25, 2012

What I’ve been reading lately:

– In this list of the 13 most useless college majors, please note that I majored in two of them (journalism and political science).

– “We think constant connection will make us feel less lonely. The opposite is true.” Are we less connected even as we’re more connected?

– If Barbie were a real woman, here’s what’d she’d look like. Not so hot, eh?

– The weird and wonderful truth about being an American working in Paris.

– “Prince Harry to Visit D.C., Inquire Why U.S. Capital Still Has No More Rights Than Under British Rule.” Motorcades, politicians and protests don’t impress us but a real life prince — Royal Watch 2012 is on.

– Do you know where your money really goes when you buy pink gear to support breast cancer?

– “My Kasual Kountry Weekend With the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.” Boy goes to KKK convention, boy meets KKK crackpots, boy realizes KKK has lost power and influence but not its insane ideas.

– I love Costco because I can get 10 pounds of Quaker Oats for under $10 but a lot of people love Costco (and IKEA) because of its food court.

– 10 of the best London food stalls. Who’s ready to hop on a plane?

– An illustrated letter from Beatrix Potter to a 5-year-old boy marks the first appearance of Peter Rabbit and his family. (Related: bookmobiles around the world.)

‘Defining the New Poor’: 46.2 million people — nearly 1 in 6 Americans — live at the poverty level. For 6 million, food stamps is their only income.

– Are you a workaholic? Test the test. (Related: people keep complaining about eating lunch at their desk but I’d rather do that and have time for a short midafternoon walk instead. Priorities, people.)

– What are the most violent states in America? Which cities are the most polluted?

What have you read recently?

Thanks for all your nice notes about my stepsister. She’s home from the hospital and doing well.
