An Update

April 23, 2012

On Friday night, my 19-year-old stepsister was in a serious car accident. The driver was drunk, it was dark and late — well, you know how these stories go.

She’s now in a shock trauma unit in Baltimore with head and brain trauma. She’s alive, and that’s the most important thing, but this was 100% preventable.

Don’t get into a car with a drunk driver.

Even if you think he’s okay to drive or he insists he’s “only had a few” — or if you are the driver and believe you’re fine after a couple of drinks — it’s not worth it. Spend a few bucks on a cab, take public transportation, sleep at a friend’s house, spend time sobering up in the nearest 24-hour Dunkin’ Donuts or jumbo slice shop.

We all make mistakes or think “just this once, what could happen?” but it only takes one time, one second for your life to change. Every 50 minutes, one person dies in a drunk driving crash. According to MADD, one in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime. Just sitting in the waiting room at the hospital, the majority of cases I overheard were crash-related, including someone’s daughter (who seemed to be around my age) who may be paralyzed after an accident crushed her spine.

Just don’t do it.

So sorry to hear about your stepsister! I’ll be thinking of you and her as she recovers! You are so right that it is not worth it to get in the car with someone who has been drinking at all.
