Thankful Thursday

April 19, 2012

It’s been a busy week, month, 2012.

Blogging has taken a backseat lately and that’s okay. Family, friends and work means I’m spending less time in front of the computer (for fun) and more time socializing, sightseeing and staring into a computer (for work, which is thankfully also fun most of the time).

What’s been worth celebrating lately?

– The Huffington Post won its first Pulitzer! (David Wood’s must-read series, “Beyond the Battlefield,” follows wounded soldiers who return from war with traumatic injuries. The stories are sad, funny, angry, inspiring and — ultimately — hopeful. Find some time to read the series this weekend.)

Brittany (my former roommate) and I are planning an epic, week-long western road trip for June. Expect to see us at every cheesy roadside attraction and dive restaurant along the drive, with a special stop at Laura Ingalls Wilder’s family homestead. I couldn’t be more excited.

– Combing through the recently-released 1940 census records has been a fascinating glimpse into American life 72 years ago. So far, I’ve found my 8-year-old grandmother in a Chicago apartment with her German mother and Mexican father, an unemployed steel mill line worker who made $300 the previous year. Now I want to find my other grandparents.

– Seeing the space shuttle Discovery fly over D.C. Tuesday was a pretty cool, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. My iPhone photos don’t do it justice but as a coworker reminded me, there were plenty of pro photographers out there who captured incredible shots of the shuttle flying by the Capitol, White House and Washington Monument.

Those have been some of the highlights of my week — what’s been exciting in your life lately?

How did you get your job? I think it sounds so fun! Although I’m not entirely sure what you do. I want to work there!

Exciting in my life is that my husband got a new job and it’s not on the weekends! He hasn’t started yet.
