Thankful Thursday

March 1, 2012

Last weekend, I had dinner with a family who came to America as refugees from Eritrea by way of Ethiopia. This family — 2 parents, 4 kids — came to the U.S. one year ago with literally nothing and yet today the kids are thriving in school and the parents are forging community in suburban Maryland.

Spending time with this family made me newly aware of how much I should be thankful for every day. I have nothing to complain about in the grand scheme of things, because life is pretty great. While I won’t make it back to Nicaragua this summer — the dates conflict with a good friend’s wedding — I’m looking into other service trips for 2012. Giving up a week of my life to help others permanently improve theirs seems like a small trade-off.

Other things I’ve been thankful for this week:

  • Fresh flowers that bring spring inside
  • Rainy night dinner parties
  • Spring clothes in store windows
  • Impromptu live music
  • Concert tickets
  • Theatre tickets
  • Plane tickets
  • Pomegranates
  • Guilty pleasure magazine reading at the gym (SelfShape and Real Simple)
  • Secondhand furniture shopping (this is the place to go in the DC area)
  • Homemade bread
  • Running into old friends on city streets

How about you?
