Great Coffee Shop Hunt: Potenza Bakery

December 28, 2011

Hello, gelato.

Sorry, gingerbread man, I’m just here for a cup of coffee. You and all your delicious gelato friends will just have to wait until my next visit.

My friend Allie has raved about Potenza for the past few years — it’s her favorite restaurant and every time we walk or drive past, she’s sure to ask, ‘Have you eaten there yet?’

Well, no. I’ve tried going for dinner and it was packed; the closest I’d come to eating there was grabbing a famous Nutella bar to-go (yes, a Nutella bar is exactly what it sounds like and, yes, it’s extraordinarily good).

Finally this week, I had the chance to sit down in Potenza Bakery — which is accessible via a separate entrance from the restaurant — and enjoy a cappuccino and a chat.

Just the way a cappuccino should be — creamy, frothy and served in an adorable cup.

The bakery has a great classic cafe feel — big plate-glass windows facing the street, tiny bistro tables, the constant bustle of people. Next time, though, I’ll need some gelato to go along with my coffee. The flavors are too good to pass up again.

Potenza Bakery would also be a great place to visit for lunch. The restaurant menu is fairly pricey but in the bakery special of the day (entree + bread pudding + soda) is only $9, one of the cheapest lunch options in the neighborhood. Something to keep in mind for the future…

And so, Potenza, I’ll be back for gelato and a real meal. Maybe Restaurant Week?

Are you working this week? It’s been so quiet at the office and in the city in general — a nice change of pace!
