Great Coffee Shop Hunt: Bourbon Coffee

September 28, 2011

When Melissa mentioned she went to Bourbon Coffee most days during work, I knew it was next on my Great Coffee Shop Hunt!

(Side note: when I first posted this photo on Instagram, Alexandra responded that Bourbon is her favorite coffee shop in DC. So that’s two votes now!)

Bourbon Coffee is actually a chain that launched in Rwanda in 2007 before one store each in Washington and New York (Boston, it’s coming your way soon!). It’s all about fair trade and sustainability — just check out Bourbon’s core values. Among other things, it’s “the first retail brand to originate from Africa.” Cool, right?

That African influence is everywhere, from the specialty Rwandan coffees to arts & crafts for sale and on display.

The bakery case, unfortunately, is filled with your typical coffee shop foods — I was hoping for some African delicacies — but I was happy to see a huge range of baked goods and local treats, including amazing-looking rugelach.

But I’m a woman on a mission to find a great cup of coffee so it was all about the latte. How did Bourbon Coffee’s latte stack up?

Good! Nice and creamy, not too foamy though, with the right ratio of milk to coffee. Although I got a to-go cup, lots of people sitting down were drinking from real mugs, which is always a good sign. I like at least having that option.

Bourbon Coffee — sustainable and delicious. Moving up the list…!

Have you ever been to Africa? Would you like to go? Which part? A Kenyan safari and a boat ride up the Nile are two of my top dream trips.

Just seeing this post. So I’m totally ready to try this out! They say coffee originated in Africa (Ethiopia I believe) so this has got to be good. I love that it started there and then moved here. Plus, the name seems cool too.

I’m probably extra interested because i have a special love for Africa. I’ve been lucky enough to visit, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Malawi and Kenya. I’d still love to visit South Africa and a few of the north African countries as well. Can’t wait to try this shop!

We must get together to talk about your travels in Africa! It’s such a dream for me and somewhere I haven’t made it to yet!

I’d love to! I’d love to join you if you find another new coffee shop to blog about! I like finding those little places too!
