Thankful Thursday

September 8, 2011

Aren’t short weeks the best? The work week barely has time to begin before… it’s over! I’m especially looking forward to this weekend because my cousin is getting married in Ocean City, Md. Besides a fun weekend away with my family, it will also be my only trip to to beach this summer. My sister and I are driving down early tomorrow morning for a full day at the beach before wedding festivities begin.

My favorite thing about a three-day weekend is that I give myself permission to do… nothing. Weekends are always go-go-go around here but after spending Friday running errands and Saturday day tripping to Westminster, Md., I came home from a lunch date Monday afternoon and just did… nothing. I made coffee. Sat on the couch and watched three episodes of ‘True Blood’ (a friend’s recommendation — hooked!). Wore sweats. Finished a book.

I’ve never understood people who spend weekends lying on the couch because it seems like a ‘waste’ of a weekend but after several productive days and a busy morning, I was thankful to just chill and stay in one place. Maybe it’s something I can get used to…!

During this lazy afternoon, I discovered a new favorite sweet treat: Adora dark chocolate discs. One of our Healthy Living Summit swag bag items was a bag of Adora calcium discs and I expected the slightly-sickening chewiness of Viactiv. Instead, Adora tastes like… chocolate.

I used to take a daily calcium supplement (since I don’t eat much dairy) but always forgot; when the bottle ran out, I stopped taking the supplement. But Adora tastes so delicious — I’ve been enjoying it post-lunch as a sweet snack — that I can’t forget because I want to eat it. Strong bones? I’m thankful for that!

What else am I thankful for this week?

  • family in Texas being safe from raging wildfires
  • amazing customer service
  • the return of Starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte
  • eating up leftovers in the fridge
  • secondhand fall fashion finds at Reddz Trading
  • a new Whole Foods exactly 0.2 miles closer to my house than the ‘old’ one — hey, 0.2 miles makes a difference when you’re walking + carrying heavy bags!

What are you thankful for this week? Do you take any vitamins or supplements? I’m so bad about remembering to take my multi but seriously, Adora has made taking calcium a breeze.

I kind of think the Adora discs taste like chalk. Luckily, I eat enough yogurt and cheese that I don’t need calcium supplementation.

How is the Foggy Bottom WF? It is pretty close to my office, but I have yet to drop in.

Haven’t been in yet — hoping to go next week once the craziness dies down. A friend went and said it was overrun with GW students…

Oo! Gotta stop by Reddz when I get home!

I should take a multi and a calcium, but I only remember one or the other. I figure that’s still pretty good. 🙂 I keep hearing about these pumpkin spice lattes. I think I’m going to have to get one tomorrow!

Definitely try it and blog about it — I love them but only in moderation — any more than a “tall” and I get a massive stomachache.

I’ve been wanting to try the Adora discs but always forget to pick some up when I’m at WF! I recently bought some of the chewy chocolate calcium bites and like them- they’re Costco brand I think?!

This week I am thankful for: an unexpected 3-day weekend [the county closed schools Friday due to flooding], time spent with my fiance [haven’t seen him all week], personal time to relax and cook healthy meals, and the sunny weather [too much rain]!

I take DHEA and Vit D3 supplements, but like you, I often forget. I find taking pills to be so…challenging!

On the flip side of that coin, I am thankful for the medicines that I have to take, which make my life better.

I am also thankful for local food! Harvest time!
