Great Coffee Shop Hunt: Dolcezza

August 31, 2011

Gelateria Dolcezza has to be one of DC’s best chains. With three Washington locations — Dupont Circle, Georgetown and Bethesda — it’s just big enough to be in a few neighborhoods, but still locally owned and operated, committed to preserving the farm-to-table relationship.

Usually I visit Dolcezza for seasonal flavors of gelato. The flavors are always rotating and unique — this week’s menu include black mission fig, cucumber mint vodka, lemon opal basil and red watermelon. Yum.

But I wasn’t at Dolcezza this week for gelato or sorbet. It was all about the coffee as part of my Great Coffee Shop Hunt.

The coffee menu has your standard line-up of espresso, lattes and chai tea but Dolcezza works with Counter Culture Coffee to brew small batch, artisanal roasts.

Unfortunately, my iced coffee wasn’t brewed from scratch or poured fresh. The barista pulled a pre-made jug of iced coffee out of the fridge, poured it over ice and — boom — there’s your iced coffee.

A splash of skim and squirt of simple syrup helped, but the coffee tasted stale. I’ve ordered hot drinks before and loved them, so I’ll stick to that in the future and avoid the iced. Dolcezza disappointment — but still go and order gelato — you can’t be disappointed with your choice on that front!

When you get a bad cup of coffee, do you ever take it back?

That is very sad that their coffee isn’t as good as their gelato, which I absolutely adore. That must have been disappointing.

Their gelato is incredible and I love that they can often tell you which contains local ingredients, where the ingredients are from, etc.

What do you think of Baked and Wired’s coffee? I went there for the first time today and LOVED it… both the coffee and the cupcake the employee persuaded me to buy 😛

LOVE IT. Love everything about B&W — the coffee, the cupcakes… Need to try the pie sometime!

I’ve had some bad experiences when I’ve ordered cappuccinos and the milk literally deflates- that’s the only times I’ve sent it back… If it’s just a bad cup of regular coffee I just don’t drink it :S
