Thankful Thursday

August 25, 2011

I can’t believe it’s been nearly a week since the Heatlhy Living Summit — where does the time go? I was so thankful to see old friends and make new ones, especially other DC bloggers. A session on Utilizing Social Media to Network and Make Friends in Your Area, led by Ashley, Cynthia and Theodora, gave so many helpful tips on creating a strong networking of blends (bloggers + friends) in your area.

Live in the DC area and looking to connect with other local bloggers? Request to join our Facebook page and follow Jess‘ comprehensive Twitter list. You’ll be thankful that you did.

Mother Nature threw some curveballs at us this week and I’m thankful that there were apparently no injuries and minimal damage — broken spires at National Cathedral, a crack in the Washington Monument and — in possibly my favorite press release ever — one angry orangutan. All in all, now I can say I’ve experienced an earthquake but even after that few seconds of shaking, I know I wouldn’t want to experience another one.

Next up: Hurricane Irene, which is expected to brush the DC area. Despite working in the media, I’m constantly amazed at how mid-Atlantic-centric the news is. Devastating hurricane heading toward the Caribbean? Secondary story. DC might get a lot of rain — headline news, special reports and stories about people stocking up for… what? Thankfully, I have enough Uncle Sam and Erewhon cereal to last for years, so hurricane party at Erin’s house!

What else am I thankful for this week?

  • close friend in town + outdoor concert at Wolf Trap + pre-concert picnic = quintessential, perfect summer evening in Washington
  • the extension of Restaurant Week and lunch at a new-to-me restaurant Saturday
  • a midday laugh: Lisa Frank gets a biopic
  • discovering Smorgie, a fun way to share and organize restaurants
  • taking a random Thursday off to run errands, attend a University of Maryland journalism school alumni event and get organized before visitors
  • this super-easy, super-delicious salad dressing

I just join the FB group this week! We were laughing about the animals at the zoo going crazy before the earthquake because I work in a research lab and all of our rats and mice were acting really strange, too. Maybe we should have paid attention to what they were trying to tell us!
