Healthy Living Summit in the City of “Bloggerly” Love

August 22, 2011

The best thing about the Healthy Living Summit wasn’t the food — even though it was good and I ate more during this ‘healthy living’ weekend than during a typical weekend at home.

The best thing about the Healthy Living Summit wasn’t the panels — even though I heard some really fantastic, educational talks and gave a (hopefully helpful) presentation on healthy travel habits.

The best thing about the Healthy Living Summit wasn’t even being in the middle of Philadelphia and exploring some of the cute, historic parts of town.

(As soon as I saw this photo in a guidebook in the hotel room, I tweeted for help tracking down the location. A few minutes later, the awesome Philadelphia Visitor Center replied: ‘It’s Elfreth’s Alley.. 2nd btwn Race and Arch #hls.’)

Thank you! Found it! The oldest continuously inhabited street in the USA and by far the prettiest part of Philadelphia.

As fabulous as that was, that wasn’t the best part.

No, the best thing about the Healthy Living Summit was the people. (Obviously.)

DC bloggers unite in Philly

Thanks to Heather and Jess for sharing their photos!

I traveled to Philly with my awesome college friend-turned-fellow blogger, Jess, and didn’t know many other people to start. It was one of those ‘What’s your name? Okay, and what’s your Twitter name?’ moments, over and over again.

By the time I left Sunday morning, I had dozens of new friends — including a bunch right here in Washington!

(Photobooths: where adults become kids.)

I barely took any photos over the weekend and that, to me, is a good thing. I was too busy having fun to take out my camera, preferring to have conversations and gossip over fro yo than whip out my camera at every opportunity to document the moment. It was nice to relax for a weekend, even as the conference was go-go-go.

Want to attend a blogging conference but afraid that you won’t know anyone? Don’t have a blog but love reading them, and think you’ll be left out? Shy?

Blogging conferences are a great way to make new friends and network, both in your city and around the country. You may go knowing no one but you’ll leave with lots of new friends. Bloggers are social creatures — we want to be your friend! — and looking around the Healthy Living Summit, there was truly a slice of America. Girls — and a few guys — of all shapes, sizes, races, backgrounds, fitness levels, areas of the country, politics.

Worried you won’t fit in? Don’t be. There is someone who wants to be your friend.

Did you attend the Heathly Living Summit? I left with so many new Twitter friends and new blogs for my Google Reader. Which blogs should I read?

Tomorrow: my favorite place in Philadelphia (this will not surprise fellow HLS attendees!)

Looks like you have a great time. I would love to go next year. I’m a Maryland blogger but would love a list of bloggers in the DC/Maryland area. Maybe a future post? Just an idea.

We’re actually working on creating a database and other resources for DC bloggers to get together and coordinate events, etc. I’ll be sure you’re on the list.

HLS 2012, if not sooner. We need some winter blogging conferences to keep the momentum going!

I’m so glad you were able to get down to Elfreth’s Alley & historic Philly — and, of course, that you had such a wonderful time.

Thanks for squeezing our meet-up into your schedule. It was so great to see you 🙂

Meeting bloggers in real life is the main reason why I want to go to a blogger conference next year! I may just be leaning to HLS 2012! These recaps have me excited to go already, and to keep up with my new healthy living blog.

It was so nice to meet you! I can’t wait until we have an opportunity to hang out again!
