Great Coffee Shop Hunt: Pound the Hill

August 17, 2011

The goal of the Great Coffee Shop Hunt isn’t just to find a fantastic place for a cup of coffee or mug of chai — it’s also to explore different neighborhoods and break out of my everyday routine.

First up, Pound the Hill near Eastern Market.

Pound is all about sustainability, organics and fair trade. The website brags they “can even tell you the names of the farmers that painstakingly nourished and harvested the beans that ended up in your cup,” brewing beans from Kickapoo Coffee, the 2010 Microroaster of the Year.

The menu includes rotating ethnic specialties — the day I was there, the special of the day was a Thai curry — but I was at Pound for a drink. A Nutella latte was tempting but when the barista said they made their own chai on-site — as opposed to using a packaged mix — I nixed coffee for a chai tea latte.

Perfectly creamy, not too much foam, just the right amount of spice. I’m in love.

Pound is full of great places to sit and lounge, from a cozy library to cute outdoor patio, but I snagged a seat right on Pennsylvania Avenue to do some reading and people-watching. Just blocks from the U.S. Capitol, this stretch of Penn is like a little slice of small town America.

I loved Pound and if I lived closer, I could see it becoming a regular neighborhood hangout. Then again, ‘close’ is all relative when you consider it’s a 15-minute Metro ride from my house… but there are more coffee shops to be explored and more drinks to drink!

Next week, the Great Coffee Shop Hunt features Philadelphia. Any suggestions?

Oooh, I’ll need to find a good coffee shop in philly, too! But for me, it’s when in doubt, find a Dunkin Donuts ๐Ÿ˜‰

Am I the only person in the world who doesn’t like Dunkin Donuts coffee? (eek!)

BUT– see you this weekend! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for all the info! A friend from Philly is meeting me for a coffee date so I’m counting on her knowing some adorable little coffee shop… no Starbucks! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’ll see you this weekend — if you’re interested in travel, I’m giving a presentation at 3:30 Saturday about staying healthy while on the road.

It was fun meeting you last night! Good luck this weekend, I’m sure you will do great! Pound is a great coffee shop. Have you tried Peregrine at Eastern Market? It’s more of a coffee lovers place and doesn’t have much else besides coffee, but it’s one of my favorites. Maybe our next blogger meet-up should be at Pound!

I’ve been to the new Peregrine on 14th Street but not the original — will definitely check out. Love finding new coffee places and yes, a blogger + coffee meet-up would be great!
