A Low-Key Weekend

August 8, 2011

This weekend I did… nothing.

Well, that’s not true. But considering that every single Saturday from now until October is booked with plans — all good, just busy — it was nice to spend the weekend in a relaxing haze.

I spent an afternoon wandering around the old Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Va., meeting a friend for lunch at the adorable Caboose Cafe before grabbing much raved-about Dairy Godmother frozen custard to enjoy alongside Dave Eggers’ Zeitoun (I couldn’t put this book down and read the entire thing in a couple of sittings on Friday!).

I went to a baby shower for my cousin, who’s expecting a baby girl in October. Things we learned: it’s easy to accidentaly insult the mom-to-be by guessing her belly is way bigger than it is during a shower game (sorry, cuz!) and I know way too much about celebrity parent-child pairs.

Thankfully, this wasn’t the cake.

I went to Sunday brunch with friends at Open City — always delicious, always worth the wait. The heat sapped my appetite and I passed on an omelet in favor of a frozen chai. Best chai in DC? I say yes.

Working on Sundays can be a drag when it’s gorgeous outside and everyone you know is out and about enjoying the day. Thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and evening made me happy to be shut inside my cozy apartment and it’s all the better since that makes today my Tuesday. The week is flying by already! 😉

How was your weekend? Do you make a lot of plans ahead of time or play it by ear? I wish I was more of a go-with-the-flow person but somehow my weekends get booked up weeks ahead of time and there’s suddenly no room for flexibility!
