Thankful Thursday

July 21, 2011

As the weather heats up — it’s supposed to feel like 112* today and even hotter tomorrow — all I can say is: I’m thankful for air conditioning. Because I work in an air-conditioned office. Live in an air-conditioned apartment. And besides a 15-minute walk to work, I spend pretty much the entire day in icy air conditioning.

I don’t want to become one of those self-righteous people who qualifies every statement with, ‘Well, in Nicaragua they don’t have…’ but in Nicaragua, there was no air conditioning. For the dozens of homeless men and women I walk past every day, there’s no escape from the heat either. Yes, it’s hot. But for most of us, it’s totally manageable. I’m at least trying to keep things in perspective.

So to keep things in perspective, while I had no air conditioning and stayed nice and sweaty in Nicaragua, I was thankful for the tiny ‘deodorettes’ MBeze sent me to try. These pocket-sized bottles were perfect for a purse or backpack — best of all, I could take them in my carry-on backpack. Definitely didn’t want to arrive in Nicaragua sans deodorant.

Who knew natural and organic could be so cute and fun?

This week has been packed — this summer is packed! — and though I couldn’t tell you where the days went, I’m thankful to head into a weekend where all the only things on my calendar are brunching, lunching, museuming and a Spanish movie marathon.

What else am I thankful for this week?

  • Sundresses and sandals
  • Farm-fresh blueberries, blackberries and peaches
  • Running into friends unexpectedly — DC truly is a small city!
  • Getting the schedule for DC Restaurant Week — time to start planning some meals
  • BBQ sauce. On everything.
  • The massive sunflowers growing at the corner of 16th and P Streets NW  — check it out if you’re in the area because they are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
  • Rosetta Stone — time to give it another try.
  • Planning a weekend trip to Boston next month…!

What are you thankful for this week?

I second your air-conditioning comment. For as brutally hot as it is, we surely have it easy compared to others. I’m also thankful for good books and good friends, because they really do make everything better 🙂

I agree it’s nasty hot out, but at least we can escape it 🙂 I’m also crazy enough to consider going to a hot yoga class today at 12… I’m hoping they won’t bother turning on the heat!

I am thankful for my boss finally leaving town for a few weeks, thankful that Restaurant Week menus are out as well, thankful that I got a clean bill of health from the doctor last week, thankful DC has seasons, and thankful I have a close knit group of friends.
