Father’s Day at Molon Lave Vineyards

June 20, 2011

For Father’s Day, the plan was for Dad to jump out of an airplane. Because nothing says ‘I love you, Dad’ like watching your father plummet to the Earth from 5000 feet.

The whole family drove down to the DC Skydiving Center in Warrenton, Va., to see Dad skydive for the first time.

The instructor was pumped and we were, too.

That’s almost the same look on Dad’s face as he when he saw the classy e-card I sent this morning:

Happy Father’s Day! 😉

Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t want Dad to jump. The sky was overcast and rain fell down intermittently; after waiting nearly 2 hours, we were told that jumps were on hold due to cloud cover and Dad wouldn’t be able to jump for at least 2.5 hours.

Thankfully we had another Father’s Day activity planned that the rainy weather couldn’t interfere with: wine tasting. Virginia is filled with wineries and vineyards and Molon Lave Vineyards was our destination yesterday.

Gorgeous, right? This family-owned Greek winery is only a few years old but has been growing grapes on the property for nearly a decade. All of the wines are cultivated on-site or at the sister winery, Mediterranean Cellars, a few miles away.

We tried the $5 tasting list — Dads drink free on Father’s Day! — that included six wines (two white, three reds and a Greek kokineli).

I generally prefer white wine over red…

but I really enjoyed Molon Lave’s reds, especially the fruity and flavorful Merlot.

Not a bad view for a rainy afternoon and a glass of wine, eh?

I loved the Greek decor inside

and plethora of summery flowers outside. Just breathing in all that fresh country air is good for the soul, I think.

Guess who else came to skydiving/wine tasting?

Lexie, of course! Since she’s my dad’s baby, it was only natural for her to come along for Father’s Day fun.

Happily, Molon Lave Vineyards was very dog-friendly. If you’re in the Warrenton-Culpeper, Va., area, stop by for a glass or a sip. Support local businesses and try some awesome wines.

We’ll have to go back to Warrenton another day for Dad to try skydiving — clear skies, please! — but what do you think? Skydiving Lexie, too?

How did you celebrate Father’s Day?

I get slightly confused whenever I read your blog because your dog has the same name and spelling as mine. That e-card is the best.

LOL — hopefully you don’t spend as much time rolling around in the mud and drinking water from puddles as Lexie the dog. 😉

I love how it’s called Molon Lave – that’s a defiant Spartan saying for “Come and get ’em!”

Yes! She told us the story behind the name — love that bit of history. You would have loved all the Greek/Spartan decor.
