Thankful Thursday

June 16, 2011

The heat wave broke after a long, sticky week here in Washington and the past few days have been gorgeous — mid-70s, sunny, low humidity — although it’s probably too much to hope that the cooler temps will stick around for the weekend. A girl can dream, right?

Last night, I helped make 1000 sandwiches for Martha’s Table. The bologna-and-cheese sandwiches will be distributed today to homeless Washingtonians at a city park. Making the sandwiches was an easy 45-minute project for me and a dozen other volunteers but it made me thankful to know a small effort on my part would help hungry people in my city. Martha’s Table tries to sneak in some nutrition by requesting wheat bread as a healthier sandwich option — because shouldn’t we be feeding people and trying to keep them healthy?

Post volunteering, a couple of friends and I celebrated summer with Mr. Yogato. Willing to perform a song and dance? Know random trivia? Want to wear a giant stamp on your forehead? Get a discount! I was happy to pay a few bucks for fro yo, instead. 😉

After indulging in chocolate-y fro yo last night (crumbled peanut butter cups is the all-time best fro yo topping), I was thankful to wake up to a cool, healthy breakfast. Fiber One gave out boxes of its new 80 Calories Honey Squares at Fitbloggin’ and I poured a bowl this morning.

A sugary, sweet Thankful Thursday treat! So much sweeter than my usual breakfast cereals — Trader Joe’s O’s has 1g of sugar compared to 3g  in this — but the nutrition facts aren’t bad. Topped with the last of my CSA strawberries (farm-fresh blueberries are here this week!), vanilla yogurt and peanut butter. Let’s see whether I’ll still be thankful for this breakfast when it’s an hour or two before lunch…

What else am I thankful for this week?

  • I’m officially unpacked and organized! No photos yet since I still need to buy a few things and finish decorating but I love the way my apartment has come together.
  • Fresh flowers. Purple and blue hydrangeas from my mom’s backyard are going strong on the coffee table and make me happy every time I see them.
  • Discovering a delicious new vegetable in kohlrabi — the kohlrabi curry was even better leftover!
  • Finally adding Free In DC to my Google Reader. So many fun, free things going on every day.
  • My daily lunch walk. Since I eat lunch at my desk and bring lunch more days than not, I take a short break midday to get outside and stretch my legs. My usual route takes me past some gorgeous scenery including…

Not bad for an afternoon stroll, right? 😉

What are you thankful for this week? Also: who designed your blog? I’ve talked to a couple of web designers about revamping Travel Eat Repeat and giving it a new look but would love to know who you worked with and would recommend.

That cherry blossom bowl is especially awesome since you’re in DC. 🙂

I just tried kohlrabi at the farmer’s market last week. It’s pretty good! Today I tried a lemon cucumber… honestly, it tastes like a cucumber. LOL!
