New Ingredient: Medjool Date

February 28, 2011

Two posts in one day — aren’t you lucky? 😉 From pear danishes to these wrinkly things:

This isn’t the first New Ingredient Challenge purchase to completely confuse the cashier and cause the classic response, ‘Um…?’

‘It’s a Medjool date. Maybe it’s under “D”?’

I’ve seen several bloggers eating Medjool dates lately as pre-workout fuel so when I noticed a big box at Safeway, I picked up a few. NPR calls these giant fruits ‘the diamond of dates.’ To give you some size perspective when I say ‘giant,’ check this out:

Please ignore my wrinkly, rainy day fingers. 😉

Medjool dates are subtly sweet, like a milder raisin or a more sugary prune, and disappear in three easy bites.

Watch out for the massive pit. A girl could lose a tooth on this thing.

I just ate the date straight-up as a snack but it would be delicious sliced onto a salad or pitted and used as a substitute for raisins. What I really want is this Roasted Butternut Squash with Medjool Dates and Toasted Almonds. How good does that sound?!

Medjool dates: you have a new fan. Even my Safeway checker doesn’t know your name.

Have you ever tried Medjool dates?

The Vegan Marathon Diet stuff you recommended to me LOVED dates. All of the pre and post run drinks had dates, the energy bars had dates, pretty much anything and everything had dates in it. Yummy.

I bet a date smoothie would be delish! Nice and sticky for granola bars, too.

I LOVE dates. My favorite recipe: Tear date in half, discard pit, dip one half in peanut butter, eat, repeat with other half.

Dates AND peanut butter?! Sounds like heaven! (also, great ‘recipe’ haha)

Dates are fantastic with nut butter of some sort. Wonderful fuel and great sweetener for baked goods.

I’ve also heard they are fantastic with proscuitto.

Wow, never would have thought to pair dates with nut butter. Trying that ASAP!

I am jumping on the peanut butter bandwagon. I love dates, but rarely eat them without swiping it in peanut butter, biting it in half, pulling out the pit, and then repeating with the rest. 🙂 They are also great fuel for running.

My favorite date/PB thing to do is something i saw on She smears PB on a piece of saran wrap, puts the date in it and wraps it up, so the date is basically covered with the pb in this litle plastic ball, and then freezes it. It’s seriously amazing to eat. One of my fave treats ever. Also try pulling out the pit and replacing it with an almond!

Medjool Dates + Mascarpone cheese = to die for.
Just discard the pit and stuff it.
You can also replace the cheese with marzipan… either way it’s awesome!!!
