Snow Shorts

January 27, 2011

Who wears snow shorts?

I wear snow shorts!

(and she wears snow shorts but I totally didn’t mean to steal Allie’s post title!).

Yes, it may be snowy out there but I dislike wearing pants over shorts when running to and from the gym. It’s a short trip and my legs are so hot after working out that you honestly can’t even feel the cold when you’re jogging home. Going to the gym is a different story but I hustle… 😉

This is a very special Thankful Thursday. If you live in DC, you’ve heard countless horror stories about last night’s commute. 100 cars were abandoned on the GW Parkway, the Dulles Toll Road was a parking lot and out traffic lights just made the situation work.

I’m very thankful because I must have left work at the perfect time yesterday. I was out the door just after 2:30 and flew home in under 50 minutes, which is less time than it takes on an average night. Coworkers who left just 45 minutes later were stuck in traffic anywhere from 3 to 15 hours! One coworker even spent the night in his car after realizing getting home was nearly impossible.

Friends shared incredible and nightmare-ish travel stories. From getting into a bus accident and walking miles home through the storm to a 15-minute drive that took 3 hours to waiting hours to get on Metro… I can’t stop saying how lucky and thankful I am. The clean-up is going on today but while main roads look great, side streets are still a mess and everything is expected to refreeze overnight.

Are Boston and New York readers laughing? DC can’t handle snow!

Terrible traffic aside, I do love the snow. I worked at Caribou Coffee through the morning before heading home to charge my laptops (work + personal) and get some fresh air. Breathing in the fresh air, I was thankful for bright skies, sparkling snow and the ability to get where I needed to go on foot.

How can you not be thankful for something this gorgeous? It’s a winter wonderland!

At lunchtime, I was craving something hot and spicy to warm me up from the inside out. Noodles & Company sent a coupon for a free entree for my birthday so I used that for a big bowl of veggie-heavy Bangkok Curry: a sweet coconut curry wok tossed with broccoli, carrots, red pepper, onion, mushrooms and a light portion of rice noodles. Served on cabbage with black sesame on top.

Topped with shrimp, it was exactly what I was craving.

After getting in a full day of work — lots of writing and reading about the northeast snowstorm, as you can imagine — I was thankful to get in a good workout. 15 minutes walking on-incline on the treadmill and 30 minutes on the elliptical passed quickly thanks to a stockpile of Real Simple.

Does anyone else want to live inside an issue of Real Simple? Life would be so much less cluttered and more organized.

My friends and I had a potluck dinner planned for tonight — we’re starting a monthly tradition so we make time for each other despite busy schedules — but that was canceled so I’ll be thankful to laze around in sweats and catch up with my favorite NBC comedies tonight: ‘The Office,’ ’30 Rock’ and ‘Parks and Recreation.’ I’m finally all caught up thanks to Fast Pass TV.

What are you thankful for tonight? Were you stuck in last night’s storm?

Portland is experiencing an unnatural warm streak of weather! It’s like 56 degrees and sunny here! All week has been nice. I love it, but I kinda want some snow. 🙂

Yeahhh! We don’t know what to do! I just felt bad for the kids that got stuck in the cold with their parents!

I want to live inside a RS magazine! So crisp, lovely, clean, and fresh-looking.

I was just talking to my mom and she told me that someone had a baby while stuck in her car on River Rd. Craziness!

I can believe it. You couldn’t get anywhere. News showed a house that burned to the ground because 911 was busy all night!

I saw footage from DC and the travel nightmare on the news — such craziness!! I know there were some similar issues up here, but nothing nearly as bad … I suppose since we had a round of snow earlier in the day, too, and the plows/salt trucks were already out on the roads. So glad you made it home safe and sound!
