The Fire Is So Delightful

December 17, 2010

I looked at the calendar this morning — okay, it was an Advent calendar, but that still counts — and realized that it’s one week until Christmas Eve and 8 days until Christmas.

Where did December go?!

There’s a pretty layer of powder covering the ground outside but I have one eye on the traffic report and it looks like the roads are clear. All I can say is: thank God I went ahead and bought four new tires last week. They definitely handled the snow and ice well last night!

After navigating the snowy streets, I wanted a hot coffee and, if possible, a roaring fire. Where to get such a thing?

The huge fireplace is the reason I visit La Madeleine so often during the winter. If only they had WiFi it would really be perfect but I guess it’s a good thing to unplug and enjoy a book or chat with a friend instead.

I’m a huge fan of the French country casual decor.

La Madeleine is dimly-lit — sometimes it can be difficult to find a place to read because you need to find the perfect spot of light — and a cavernous mix of small rooms, which make it feel more private and monastic that your typical fluorescent coffeehouse.

My goal is basically to stalk the people who have staked out seats near the fireplace, creepily watching them until one table vacates, then quickly jump up to snag a prime spot.

Hey, you have to be quick! 😀

As for eats, I stick to the basics.

A never-ending cup of French roast coffee and hearty wheat bread, which is free for the taking. I love smothering a few pieces in Bonne Maman blueberry jam. Mmm…

La Madeleine is so cozy that I’m considering showing up next time in fleece pants, wool socks and a Snuggie. There’s not a dress code, right?

What are your plans for the weekend?

Oh my gosh, that place is so cozy! I would stalk people for that fireplace too. Thanks for your comment on my blog – it’s so good to be back!! 🙂

Oh my gosh we have nothing like that here in Lynchburg– if only! It looks so cozy. Maybe I should just forget the teaching degree and open up my own La Madeleine? Eh?
