Ritzy Ritz Tea

December 11, 2010

Somehow I got through today without taking a single picture of the reason I was at the Ritz Carlton today: my family. My cousin took photos so hopefully she will share those soon.

Every year at Christmastime, the women in my family — grandmother, aunts, cousins, sister and mom — gather for a holiday get-together. Many cups of tea are consumed, enough sugar ingested to give me a day-long sugar coma and the afternoon slips by in the blink of an eye.

I like the formality of tea at the Ritz, the way the entire room is filled with groups of women (and one table of gay men), the fact that you can sit for hours with a constantly-refilled cup of tea while enjoying a pianist playing Christmas tunes.

My tea of choice today was Masala Truffle, a spicy and light chai. It was sweet and flavorful enough not to need any sugar or milk.

Afternoon tea service starts with a plate of sandwiches: cucumber, pear & pecan, prosciutto & asparagus, and smoked salmon with caviar. I didn’t eat the prosciutto but gobbled down everything else — I was hangry! The pear + pecan combo was my favorite, with its mix of savory nuttiness and sweet fruit.

Next up was a platter of sweets and scones.

Where to start? If you’re me, it’s all about a blueberry scone smothered with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Don’t even bother telling me nutrition facts when it comes to scones and cream. I don’t want to know. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Ritz clearly pays a lot of attention to small details — check out the bottom of the chocolate-covered strawberries.

After 3 hours, I walked away from the table stuffed but happy. It’s unusual for me to go all out like this and I don’t regret a single sugary bite! ๐Ÿ˜€

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

I love this tradition and am already looking forward to next year! Right now, though, I need a loose-fitting pair of pants and a comfy couch. Oomph!

What are you up to this weekend? It’s supposed to be freezing and rainy tomorrow (boo) but church is doing a Messiah sing-along (yay!)

There’s a place in Seattle called Queen Mary’s Tea Room that I used to go to as a kid with my mom. We’d get their fancy tea and crumpets. It was so much fun dressing up and doing that!
