Health check and checking out VIA

July 1, 2010

Wow! Well, I had every intention of blogging yesterday — had a post all written in my head — but my friend Erin invited a few of us to her place for a Mexican fiesta and one thing led to another…

Before I knew it, it was 10pm, half of a cookie ice cream cake was gone and I was still out being social. What kind of unusual Wednesday night is that?! 😉

A good one, that’s for sure!

Since I got home past my bedtime, there was no way to blog. Apologies all around.

What I was going to write about, though, was my successful health check Tuesday.

The nurse administering the test used to work in the cardiac intensive care unit but switched to preventative care so she can treat patients before they have to be admitted to a cardiac unit. My company offers free health checks throughout the year–sign up for a 10-minute window and get your weight, BMI, heart rate, blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol measured.

It’s a really fantastic method of preventative care and, since they come to our building, more people are likely to take the tests since it doesn’t require any extra effort… besides fasting for 6-8 hours before the test.

You know that I signed up for the earliest time because I like eating breakfast first thing in the morning! Can you imagine opting for a 12 or 1pm test while knowing you can’t eat beforehand?! I would be a) hungry b) tired c) cranky or d) all of the above.

The test results were great. My nurse kept saying things like ‘good’ and ‘excellent,’ so I was happy to hear that! It was my first time having glucose and cholesterol tested but these are important numbers to know as they relate to diabetes and heart disease, both of which run in my family.

In fact, my glucose level was actually a little low which I took as a sign I should be eating more sugar… leading to the excessive cookie eating later that night… 😉

I agree with everyone who said that BMI isn’t the best indicator of health — remember skinny fat? — but do think that it’s important to be aware of the numbers and have an idea of your internal health, which is so much more important than what you look like.

After the test, I was in desperate need of breakfast and a cup of coffee. A sample of Starbucks VIA showed up in my mailbox earlier in the week (from Walmart, randomly) so this was the perfect opportunity to try it out.

It couldn’t be easier — dump the powder into a cup, stir in boiling water, add a splash of milk, fin!

This is actually the closest I’ve found in America to the great instant coffees — I’m talking Nescafe now — and had a great, rich flavor. Why are most American instant coffees so fake-tasting?

VIA was delicious. I wouldn’t use it as a substitute for my French press every day, but in a pinch it does the job. It’s also nice to have those small packets at the office so I’m less tempted to make a mid-morning or mid-afternoon trip to the cafe.

Starbucks VIA = win! Health = win! Wednesday = win!

One more day until a three-day weekend for July 4th! Do you have any Fourth of July plans? I’m going to see lots of friends, check out the fireworks at the U.S. Capitol and hopefully do some grilling. Food, fun and fireworks = Fourth of July!

Good to see you taking care of yourself was confirmed in tests! We had our 4th of July today which resulted in no extra time off but actually less time off today. Still got a round of golf in though so not a bad day. Hope you have a great 4th weekend!

It was pretty good but won’t replace a “real” cup.

I’m running a 10K on Sunday and then maybe going up to the top of this hotel to watch fireworks.

Omg I totally KNOW what you mean about instant coffees! Europe, for being the coffee snobs they are, have some great instant coffees.

I haven’t yet tried Via, but I’m not big on plain coffee.
